Power Outlets Not Working? Flickering Lights? Need an Upgrade?
There’s a lot you can thank your home’s electrical system for: a charged phone, an air conditioned home, a fridge and freezer to preserve food (or make popsicles), lights, power to your television, and the list goes on. It isn’t until something happens to your electrical system that you notice all the conveniences it powers. Power surges could leave areas of your home without electricity; faulty wiring could lead to flickering lights or switches and outlets that don’t work as they should. In a worst-case scenario, electrical issues could lead to fires and explosions that could put you, your family, and your home in jeopardy.
If you notice any electrical problems, you should call a licensed and insured electrician as soon as possible. Furthermore, you can catch most electrical problems even before you notice them by hiring an electrician to regularly inspect and maintain your system, which includes installing a new grounding system or surge protectors, and replacing any burnt-out or outdated circuits in your electrical panel.

Quality Home Service in Tanglewood Since 1965
In 1965, John Moore started as a modest plumbing company committed to providing Houston homeowners with reliable plumbing services. Over the past 50 years, we’ve found more ways to help homeowners. In 1997, we added HVAC services. A year later, we began excluding pests from Houston and Tanglewood homes with our pest control team. And in 2005, we added electrical services by hiring only the most qualified Houston-area electricians. We have helped thousands of Houston homeowners feel secure in their homes with home services they can trust.
When it comes to your home’s electrical system, it’s important to keep a critical eye on any light fixtures, appliances, and outlets that don’t work as they should. Flickering lights, humming sounds, and outlets that aren’t working could mean that there is a bigger problem building up either in your walls or electrical panel. If these problems go unaddressed for too long, you could be at risk of an electrical fire in your home.
Notice: If you are currently dealing with sparking wires or an electrical fire, immediately call your power company and ask them to temporarily discontinue power to your home. Call 911 or Houston Fire Department #2 on Woodway at (832) 394-6700 to extinguish any fires before you call John Moore.

Distribution Panel Inspection, Repairs, and Replacements
Much like your heart distributes blood to the various organs around your body, your home’s distribution panel divides and distributes electricity to the various light fixtures, appliances, and outlets around your home. Furthermore, your distribution panel also performs two critical safety functions: grounding excess electricity that enters the system, and turning off power to areas of your home that draw unsafe amounts of electricity. Some older distribution panels fail to shut power off in the event of a power surge, which could lead to a fire or explosion. Although many homes in Tanglewood have been renovated over the past 20 years, you may want to check your distribution panel to ensure that it isn’t a model that has been recalled. If you do find that your distribution panel has been recalled, John Moore’s licensed electricians can replace it with a new, fully functional panel.
Sometimes, components within your distribution panel can malfunction. Some examples are a short circuit, burnt-out fuses, or small explosions within you panel. If you have a circuit that won’t reset or notice burn marks on the face of your panel, chances are something within your distribution panel has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. Unless you are a qualified electrician, you should never attempt to replace these parts yourself as you could be fatally electrocuted.
Experiencing problems with your distribution panel? Call 713-730-2525 to schedule an inspection from our licensed electricians in Tanglewood.
Tanglewood Rewires for a Safer, Energy Efficient Home
If your distribution panel is like the heart of your home’s electrical system, then your home’s electrical wires are like the veins, carrying electricity from your distribution panel to the various outlets, appliances, and light fixtures around your home. Contemporary electrical wiring systems use copper wires that are insulated with a PVC plastic. Copper is used because although it is conductive, it provides enough electrical resistance to ensure that your wires don’t get so hot that they melt their insulation. PVC plastic is used to insulate wires because it i known to stay intact over long periods of time, even in the heat or cold. Some wiring systems found in homes built before the 1970s use aluminum wires instead of copper. Aluminum can overheat, sometimes sparking fires within the walls of older homes. Likewise, electrical wires installed in homes before the 90s use a different type of plastic insulation that is known to brittle over time, which could lead to exposed wires. If you live in an older Tanglewood home with the original wiring system still intact, you may want to call a licensed electrician to inspect and upgrade the wires in your home.
Newer homes are also vulnerable to wiring mishaps, primarily from rodents and other pests that are known to chew through wires and their insulation. If you notice flickering lights, outlets that don’t work, or hear a buzzing sound from within your walls, then there may be an issue with your home’s wiring systems. If we notice that rodents have chewed through your home’s wires, then we will refer our pest control team to exterminate and exclude the rodents in your home so that they don’t destroy your new system as well.
