Keeping Cinco Ranch Homes Safe
Many Cinco Ranch homes were built between 1990 and the present day. Despite most of Cinco Ranch’s homes being relatively new, it’s important to have your electrical system inspected on a regular basis. Even what could seem like a small electrical malfunction- a flickering light or outlet that doesn’t work- could mean there is a larger problem within your walls or breaker panel that could lead to larger problems in the future. Any number of things could cause electrical issues, even in seemingly new homes.
Notice: If you are currently dealing with a sparking live wire, smoke, or fire caused by your electrical system, immediately call your electrical provider and ask them turn off your home’s electricity. Call the Katy Fire Department via 9-1-1 dispatch to extinguish any fires before calling John Moore.

Distribution Panel Repairs and Replacements in Cinco Ranch
Your distribution panel (also sometimes referred to as a breaker panel, electrical panel, or breaker box) is the central terminal of your home’s electrical system. It distributes electricity to each appropriate appliance, light fixture, or outlet as you use them. An important feature built into breaker boxes is that they detect when too much electricity is being used by a certain outlet or appliance, at which point they will cut power to that outlet or appliance to prevent overheating and the possibility of an electrical fire. Older panels may not include this important safety feature, which is why you should check to see if your panel is outdated or has been recalled. If your distribution panel is outdated, you should have it replaced with a new, safe panel as soon as possible.
Electronics age, and unfortunately your breaker box is no exception. Even in relatively new homes, homeowners must remain vigilant to ensure the safety of their panels. Insects and other pests can make their way into your electrical system and short electronic wiring and circuits. Frequent power surges may also lead to a circuit malfunction or even cause a fuse to explode within your breaker box. If you notice that a circuit won’t reset on your breaker panel, or there are black marks on the panel itself, you should have your electrical panel inspected by a licensed electrician who can then make any necessary repairs or replacements. Even if there aren’t any immediate signs of an issue, it’s still good practice to get your breaker box checked out every few years to prevent a problem that could have been detected early.
Call 713-730-2525 to schedule a licensed John Moore electrician to check out your breaker panel.
Rewires in Cinco Ranch
Behind the walls of your home lies a wiring system that connect your distribution panel to the various lights, outlets, and appliances around your home. Modern-day electrical wires are made of copper and are insulated with PVC. In some of Cinco Ranch’s earlier homes built in the early 1990s, it’s not uncommon to find electrical wires made of aluminum with a cheaper plastic insulator.
The problem with these older wiring systems is that aluminum has less electrical resistance, meaning it is more likely to overheat and potentially melt the insulation it’s inside of, exposing the wire. In addition, non-PVC insulators can grow brittle over time, which is another common way for aluminum wires to become exposed. When exposed wires come into contact with another conductor, it can lead to sparks and electrical fires. Pests can also chew through wire insulation, exposing wires even in newer homes.
If you have flickering lights in your home, outlets or switches that don’t work, or if you hear a buzzing sound from behind your walls, you should call a licensed electrician to inspect your home’s wiring system.
